Not sure if https://github.com/apache/zookeeper/pull/1764 is related, can you also check the Zookeeper Server log? We choose zookeeper 3.4 client because it claims to support 3.4/3.5/3.6 server, see more details at https://github.com/apache/incubator-kyuubi/issues/838.
