Hey folks,

We're getting gradually closer to the open source release of our XLIFF
translation editor (it's currently referred to as "STE" (Sun Translation
Editor) - it'll definitely change it's name once it's released of
course) and things are starting to progress again : it's been a hard
slog, but the end is in sight.

Young asked me to drop this alias a mail to talk a bit about the
prospects of using the STE with free java implementations.

(at the risk of sounding like a troll) We've done a bit of investigation
here and concluded that at the moment, it probably won't work with
either GNU Classpath or Kaffe.

There's only Boris (and me sometimes) working on the editor here, while
I spend my time working on the rest of the XLIFF filters and TM server
code -- right now, we don't have the bandwidth to try to make the code
run on older or slightly incompatible Java implementations. Right now,
we need to run the editor under the Sun JDK 1.4.2 or greater.

Now, that's not to say it's impossible, or a bad thing to have the code
run on a free java implementation, far from it - I'd love to make the
editor as accessible as possible, just that we haven't got there yet.
When the code is open-sourced, we'd be delighted to get help achieving
this goal, along with the other hopes we have for the future of the
editor and the rest of the translation tools, which we think are pretty
nifty.

If you haven't seen the editor before, there's a recorded demo at :

Loads more info on my blog about the tools as well - just need to dig a
bit for it.

        cheers,
                        tim
