Does one install the 'kid build' alongside the 'plain' national build and then run either 'plain' binaries or 'kid' binaries?
Yes, you do
Or does one replace the plain build with the kid?
Absolutely not !
In fact the KID is a kind of map to easily find parts of the userinterface or the help-files which are identified bij strings So every string you see in your normal installation will have a string attached to it ( yes that doesn't look pretty)

Install the kid beside your "normal"installation.

My normal installation is on C:\ program files (yep still on Windooze)

My other installations are on E:\ so I have there E:\OOo 3,3.0 M4 and E:\KEY_id

I start them up with separate shortcuts on the desktop

I mostly unpack the installset on the desktop and then run setup.exe with parameter /a to be able to change the installpath.

After installation I change the userconfiguration in bootstrap.ini from the installation to $ORIGIN/..
that will make sure it does not interfere with my "normal installation"
