Is anyone here involved in the Arabic L10N community? We need a little help
with a user, Nassern51, who is attempting to translate or create Arabic pages on
the OOoWiki. (see [1] and [2])
Due to a language issue, or a misunderstanding of how Wikis work (or both), this
user is making changes to the OOo Wiki that have to be rolled back or repaired.
Some of these changes include:
- Changing dates or inserting invalid date information
- Changing download links on pages to point at the Arabic version
- Changing existing OOo website links to point to the Arabic OOo project
equivalent (see [3] for an example of changes made to the Main Page)
- Changing MailTo: links to point to the Arabic email address equivalent
- Replacing IntraWiki links (used to link page translations to each other)
with the Arabic link, deleting all other links in the process.
- Replacing entire sections of English Wiki page content with Arabic
translations (deleting the original in the process)
The Wiki admins have attempted to limit the damage done by:
- Emailing the user directly
- Rolling back or correcting the damaging changes
- Putting a temporary 24 hour ban on the user account
- Adding a comment to the User's Discussion page
- Adding a banner to the top of the User page (to try and alert the user to
the problem)
None of these attempts appear to have had any impact since this user continues
to make destructive changes on the Wiki.
We would like to encourage all contributions on the OOoWiki, especially in areas
where there is a lack of good content such as with the Arabic Wiki pages, but
not when it is constantly destructive to existing content.
So, is there anyone here who is participating in the Arabic L10N who can maybe
have a polite chat with this person and explain to them what the problem is?
(you can use the E-mail this user link in the Toolbox menu on the User's Wiki
page to send them an email).
If this cannot be sorted out, the Wiki admins may need to apply a longer more
permanent ban to this user account to stop the damage to the existing
information on the Wiki. This is a last resort solution, and one we do not want
to have to use.
