There's no specification yet. I suggest you to start a thread on the Lenya users list to collect information and summarize it on a page in the Lenya wiki.

2, 3, and 4 should be discussed on the developers list.

That's currently in a refactoring process. I suggest to check out Lenya 1.4 (trunk) from Subversion and examine the code. There were some messages on the list lately, maybe you'd like to join the discussion?
