Can you make it so it defaults to the old directory structure if the
entry is missing from publication.xconf? It only needs to be
configurable when someone configures it.
I guess this is no problem.
The backwards compatibility problem will certainly affect the API,
so maybe some custom classes won't compile anymore :(

definitely, but we should discuss it first anyway, because Lenya 1.2.X
is supposed to be backwards compatible
and even if I myself would like to get this enhancement into Lenya 1.2.X
I think we need to stick to this rule in general.
