well, I don't know what the reason was that Antonio stepped up. But before he stepped up some people already offered to do releases based on rotation concept. So, why not share the load?

I agree with "share the load", like I said, later in this same mail...

Perhaps the problem is that somewhere along the line a title "Release Manager" has been applied to the "post". Strip the title, focus on this release, recognise the contributions being made and get on with it.

The attribution of a title implies that someone is taking responsibility for *all* releases, whereas what should be happening is someone steps up to do the *next* release.

Also I think the PMC members resp. committers do have certain responsibilities and if one doesn't have the time or whatever reason then one should step back from this role (e.g. become inactive resp. emeritus).

I agree in principle, but...

It seems to me that most people here got anxious because I wasn't very diplomatic and I agree I wasn't dimplomatic at all.

I think that is the case, the message is getting either confused or lost. I seem to be seeing a proposal to insist on committers doing a release otherwise they lose committership.

You now mention emeritus status, which is more acceptable. However, being made emeritus usually occurs by request or because the committer has made no contribution within a defined time period. That contribution should be anything, not something defined by the projects PMC. We must recognise that some people simply do not have the skill set, or the desire, to do a release, are you going to kick them out of your community?

Of course, the Lenya PMC is free to define its bylaws as it sees fit, but following the lead of other ASF communities is a good idea in my opinion.

Having said all that, since I am not a committer here I will not attempt to influence your bylaws any further. I have expressed my concerns regarding the approach of a defined release manager role (which mirror Michi's) and the idea of forcing people to participate (which mirror Thorstens). Having expressed my concerns I can now sleep soundly at night.

The rest is up to the Lenya devs.
