Not sure, when I tried it my resources were not stored in the external
location as well so it wasn't really useful to me. Perhaps there is a
way to have external resources that I didn't know about.

store content for example on NFS to be shared by multiple
servers, in this case the meta data should be on the NFS as well,

BTW, IMO all stored data (content, users, policies, ...) should
resources too :)
be in a common repository, for which a location can be specified.
Offering the configuration option should be the responsibility of
a file-system based repository implementation.
