I agree with your points so let's forget this patch for now, but the original problem still exists. You said: "You can't add custom resource types without patching the editor module(s). IMO it makes more sense to have it the other way round (like it is now), because adding new resource types is certainly more usual than adding new editors." But this highlights the problem. Whether one way is more normal does not matter, because there is a dependency in either case. Currently if I don't want the bxe editor, or kupu, or one form, all of the resource type modules have to be patched. And overwriting menu.xsp in the pub is just a way of circumventing the problem. So maybe neither the editor modules or resource type modules should have menus and it could be handled in the publication menus.
