Hi Lenya devs,
here's an entertaining essay on different open source contribution
styles by a Drupal developer, including some guidelines:

The article, and especially the discussion, nicely illustrates some
dynamics from the point of view of newbie and casual contributors
which I'm not always aware of. Especially in consideration of the
current contribution discussion on the user list, it might be worth
thinking about our review processes and habits.
After reading the article, I have the impression that the Drupal
community manages to encourage a lot of users to submit patches via
the issue tracker. I have the feeling that many Lenya contributors
aren't motivated enough to submit patches. There are several potential
reasons:
* It is too complicated to get familiar with the product, therefore
they don't even try to implement bugfixes or improvements.
* They implement patches, but think that
* nobody else would be interested in them.
* the quality of the patches is not sufficient.
* nobody will take the time to review and commit them.
Is this correct? Are there other reasons?
I think these are some of the top reasons. I know I stay out of the core
due to its complexity. I'm not a Cocoon developer, so that's my biggest
problem.
We do need to try to encourage more community in the project, but I'm
not entirely sure the best way to go about doing that.
