I don't think you should add a select field to the images, but rather
create a doctype/module image gallery which has a lookup functionality
re images which have been uploaded one and hence can be selected
(similar functionality as the "text" editors are providing).

The collection resource type could be used as a basis. The news resource
type is another example of an extension of the collection resource type,
maybe we can handle the gallery in a similar way.

The collection resource type also supports a "children" mode which would
cover the usage scenario suggested by Jürgen.
