David, are you more interested in the backend, i.e. the linguistic stuff, or the frontend, i.e. integration into OpenOffice.org? It's the frontend which currently just doesn't exist and slows down the development of the backend (because if nobody can see at least an alpha version of a grammar check in action, nobody is motivated to work on it). If you would like to add grammar checker integration into OOo, that would be great. The basic idea: it's just like a spell checker, but it doesn't work on words but on sentences (see the list archives for details). However, it's not going to be easy, as OOo is quite complex.
