With the e-fulfilment sites from which I've bought pdfs
they ALL send an email with a download URL containing a
unique link (which who knows they may check). This is
explained during the transaction so the buyer knows he
MUST give a valid email address. To do any less does not
engender buyer confidence, since the connection could
easily break during a one-time download. It's also a
courtesy since they might want to delay a large d/l
(e.g. currently calling from an internet cafe)

The classier ones also give a transaction reference
with contact info during the actual purchase so the
punter can complain if the email doesn't arrive
(e.g. is spam-blocked by the ISP)

IMHO this is close enough to best practice that if
you didn't follow this scenario it would tarnish
your brand.

HTH, Duncs

Use CFCONTENT to serve up the PDF, then there is no link to it.
