It doesn't help when Macromedia couldn't give a flying crap about the
community either.

I asked Lucus to see if he could get me an upgrade to CFMX7 for CFDeveloper,
not only did they say no, but he actually couldn't be bothered to even
email me and tell me that or explain why, I only found out cozz I bumped
into him at CFUG and asked him. A bit of courtesy doesn't take much effort.
As I told MM, CFDeveloper is responsible for a lot of companies and
developers actually choosing to go with ColdFusion, if they were not able to
come and try it out on CFDeveloper they would have used ASP or PHP instead,
and I have received many emails actually telling me this and thanking me for
this service.
So in retrospect, MM don't even give a hoot aboout their paying customers or
potential customers either.
And b4 you say, oh it's all about you, they also wouldn't support the
CFEupope event that Niklas was trying to sort out, so that flopped as well.

Unlike the days of Allaire, if you want to run a community that is anything
to do with Coldfusion or any other Macromedia product,it seems you have to
do it with no help or support from them and out of your own pocket. Which
doesn't really give you a lot of faith in the product.
Even microsoft isn't that tight. Microsoft will give out free software to
anyone running a microsoft related community. And I know this cozz I was
once gonna start up a more generic developer community rather than a
coldfusion specific one, and mentioned this to some MS guy that I met at a
party, next thing I knew they sent one whopping great package of software to
me:- windows 2000 server, visual studio, Internet Application server, tons
of stuff.

I think the Americans are generally bigger on the whole community thing than
us brits. Come on brits are not exactly known for being friendly, if you go
into a pub by yourself you will stay that way all night. In the U.S. anyone
will come and speak to you.
Or perhaps MM do support U.S communities and just hate brits.

But I would say, if you are going to start a community, realise how much
work it is, I can tell you that running CFDeveloper does take up a fair bit
of my time. If you don't have a decent site, no one with bother using it.
And to be honest there is no excuse. There are so many FREE web site
builders, templates, portal systems etc out there that you would really have
to be a total numpty if you can't throw together a half decent looking web
site with all that. CFDeveloper may be mostly an ASP web site, but so what?
It's a community web site, who cares what it's written in as long as it does
it's job. And yes I have had a bit of stick about that. But then that's like
saying, if you build a gay web site, you must be gay, or if you eat
vegetables you must be a vegetarian.

Opps I have just ranted again haven't I.... I'll go away now.
