If somebody has to call up about an order, do you want them to have to quote some nightmare 20 char string at you, or a simple order number which can be easily recognized on both sides of the supply chain. Stick with a simple incrementing order ID. If you want to make it more complex, then create some sort of reference using a combination of orderID, date, postcode, and penis size.
