This:
createObject("java", "java.io.File").init(x).mkdirs();
is cleaner than:
<cfif NOT DirectoryExists(x)>
<cfdirectory action="CREATE"....>
</cfif>
???
No chance! Someone writing CF shouldn't need to know about the File class.

Honestly Rich, aside from Sandbox as you state - if you do use that Java
function (and you are allowed to) then use that - it is clean and fast -
aside from that a cftry will do the job..

Aside from the sandbox dispute.... :)
Once the directory is created ... it throws and error if it trys to create
it again...
What is the most efficient way to first test the presence of the directory
and only create it if not there already?
(list attribute of cfdirectory help here?)
