Or, if you want it simple, stick to a csv which can easily be turned
into queries, written to, created etc. with cffile and some
simple cf.

Yep you can do it this way...
As I said, using POI, you do require an ODBC connection; it is entitely
native Java - it allows you to not only create the Excel sheet on the fly
but also, manipulate cells, fonts, create worksheets, something an ODBC
connection cannot AFAIK.

Hi Lee
Take a look at
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_18656
Basically create an ODBC to the spreadsheet and then an ODBC socket in the
cf administrator.
Once you have the datasource verifying you can return a query object of the
excel worksheet via:
<cfquery name="TEST" datasource="#DNS#">
SELECT *
FROM [WORKSHEET_NAME$]
IN 'c:\upload.xls' 'EXCEL 5.0;'
</cfquery>
Let me know if you have any problems

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone can recommend the best way to capture information
from an uploaded excel spreadsheet or CSV file, is there anything in
particular I should be looking out for, which one is the best format,
delimiters etc?
We are building a system and can define how we want people to supply the
information so easiest options are what we are looking for. Thinking along
the lines of a CSV file which gets saved to a directory and is then read
into a variable, the variable is then read line by line using the CRLF as
the delimiter (columns and headings would already be defined) and then doing
a DB insert assuming the line conforms to the expected criteria, i.e. the
number of columns and column length etc.
Using CFMX hosting as the host with a semi dedicated server so custom tags
might be an option.
Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
Lee
