The only example I can think of that u probably know about is the MySQL3.x JDBC driver that comes with CFMX, this wont work with MySQL 4.x because the encryption algorithm of passwords changed in MySQL 4.x, and the driver doesn't send the password in the correct format.
The driver creates a prepared statement that is sent to the database (server) This is also why sometimes a CFSTOREDPROC wont work, but an EXEC statement will work, because I believe the exec statement is sent as is.
