This happened to my box in November last year. Sounds like it might have been rooted... if so it could be a lost cause and you'll have to grab a copy of all your data, then flatten the box and start from scratch.

In my case the box was being used as a file server, but all the files were hidden from the OS. The only way I could tell that they were there was because there was a massive difference between the reported disk useage and the actual size of all the directories on the HDD.

Rootkits are really difficult to find because they dupe the operating system. If you look at the task manager, the rootkit processes won't appear in the task list. CPU and memory useage will look normal.

I hope for your sake this is not the case. It could just be something less obtrusive.

Really handy piece of software. I was rather impressed, so I'm probably going to buy the full version.
