I've flown from Newcastle to London in the past..... It works out about the same as going on the train in terms of time and money. In fact, it often costs more to fly than to use the train.
The time gets eaten up by having to be at the airport an hour+ early, then if you fly to/from Standsted (or any of the london airports for that matter) you've got the cost and time of the transfer into London.
