LDAP is a protocol (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) for accessing
directories, which are in effect hierarchical as opposed to relational
databases. That makes them more akin to a file system than to Access.

One of the things that makes directories pretty tight on security is the
inherent level of access control. The username and password you provide
when accessing the directory dictates which nodes you'll be allowed to view,
modify, search etc.

The username / password they need there is part of the underlying directory
security, and will allow LDAP access to a subset of the directory hierarchy.

Hope I've remembered all that correctly! If you really want to impress your
colleagues, have this link open on your desktop...

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2254.txt

.. which is the actual spec for LDAP searches. Here's a useful tutorial as
well...

http://quark.humbug.org.au/publications/ldap/ldap_tut.html

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Robin

Hi.

Im pretty new to LDAP technologies and wondered if anyone could help me
please.

I am trying to query the ldap.

I am not sure what the username and passord refer to.
Is ldap itself protected by this or is this the username & password to log
into the server?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards - Paul
