Hi Nick. CFXMLGateways doesn't appear to work on CF8 and I think the author
has stopped supporting it. OpenFire is a great stand alone IM server and so
simple to set up, but I couldn't get CF to connect to clients that aren't
using a Jabber network. I know it's possible but I couldn't fumble my way to
a solution.

JBuddy was the most promising but the software isn't capable of using any
ports other than the default ones for each IM network. For example, MSN
defaults to port 1863. The Microsoft client is smart enough to try other
ports including 80 if it can't connect to the MSN server through 1863. Same
goes for AIM, etc. However, JBuddy gives up immediately if it can't see the
IM server via the default port. This means the CF server can't be behind a
firewire, or at least a tight firewall.

Despite opening port 1863 it still wasn't able to connect which was a shame
as the software uses the same cfml to control as the built-in XMPP gateway.
In fact I found out that the JBuddy people wrote the XMPP gateway and
licensed it to MM/Adobe for CF7/8. Their MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc gateways cost
$$$ to license but their support is excellent.

I'm just stuck with a stupid firewall problem because their software isn't
adaptive when it comes to ports and tunneling. Or arguably because I can't
lower our shields low enough. I got the Yahoo gateway working which is
brilliant but no luck with MSN which is used by about 60% of IM'ers in
Europe. I'd be happy if just MSN worked.

If you get further than me or find something else please let me know!
Thanks.
