I thought the processingdirective in cfmx8 was utf-8 by default?
Nope, I got caught out by that myself before. The default file encoding in CF is the value of the file.encoding JVM system property, the default value of which is dependent on the OS and locale. You can set it using a jvm argument though, -Dfile.encoding=blah. I usually just set the encoding explicitly when using cffile, and stick to ascii in cfml source to avoid any problems.
