Yup, it's using MX.  The problem occurs on both windows and Linux hosts.

The actual insert is OK (can see from the actual record in the DB that
the � (GBP) symbol is being stored correctly -- it's only on retrieval
that it goes a bit pear shaped.  As I mentioned, I've found a work
around, but it'd be nice to know why it does this?
