Verity can do some strange things at times. I've not mucked about with K2
much, but certainly the original can sometimes lock up files etc.

I tend to run a repair on a collection before updating etc. and I generally
purge a collection before deleting it. Also, if you're going to delete a
collection, you really ought to make sure that nothing can be using it at
the time. Switching off a live website may be a bit drastic, but you could
disable the search action template while deleting a collection.
