ok here's the current state of play:

we have 2 cfmx machines on our network.

NEITHER can connect to a sql server 2000 machine (of which we have 2
separate machines)
BOTH can connect to sql server 7 machines (of which we have 2 also)

we also have a couple of CF5 machines - these CAN connect to SQL 7 and 2000
without hitch (using the same DSN and SQL server details as we used for the
CFMX machines).

all machines have the same firewall configuration.

in short, we have a definite problem with CFMX and SQL server 2000.
