I am in the process of moving my server whilst trying minimise website downtime. My name server is thistle.pricklythistle.com and used to be at 62.254.184.14. I have modified the domain record for pricklythistle.com to move the domain to 81.130.207.204 - I did this two days ago. If you go here: http://www.samspade.org/t/lookat?a=pricklythistle.com it shows that the new IP has been set but if you go here: http://www.samspade.org/t/lookat?a=goldcockerelbooks.co.uk it still has the IP of the name server as the old one. When I stop the DNS server on the old box the site still works. My question is this: is the old IP simply cached along with the DNS records and the IP will update the next time the DNS server asks for any info from thistle.pricklythistle.com In other words is it safe to unplug the old server today? Thanks.
