RSS is easily handled by the MX xml > parser functions. There are some people on this list who use RSS for feeds and the like. It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to consume an RSS feed, I would suggest just practicing on that. If you want to do something else, then do that. Remember, XML is only really a data transfer tool, and in itself is useless in a badly designed system (ie don't use XML for XML's sake). It's best use is in things like Web Services and situations like that where direct connection between two repositories is unsafe/stupid/impossible. For example, if you want to make your current news data accessible, then it would be silly to give people access to the database. Effectively, it's just another layer. BTW RSS being an "entry point" is fair enough. Maybe also have a look at consuming a web service without using the web service tools (ie retrieve the XML and then parse it). I was creating and consuming web services in both Java (cool) and VB Script (yuck) well before CFMX came out (and it became a "cool" thing to be able to do). As with everything to do with a language, being able to "do" things with it is one thing, but being able to understand "why" you should do it in a certain way is another. I think if you've looked into SAX and DOM, then you should be able to know what you are doing.
