Giles, personal firewalls are not meant for protecting servers and really
wont do a very good job.
The pro version of Zonealarm may do a better job than thwe free one tho.
A software firewall on the same box as the server is never going to be a
very good choice because your not actually blocking access to the machine.
You need to have the firewall on a separate box.
Your host may provide a shared firewall solution as we do for our customers,
and you can put your server behind that.

The other issue with using software on the server itself, is that you can
end up locking yourself out of the server.
If your intent on going down the personal firewall route, other than
zonealarm, the other most popular ones are Kerio personal firewall,
blackice defender, wingate/winroute, Sygate Personal firewall.

What version do you use? The earlier post recommended version 2 but the
current version is version 5.

Why version 2 Aiden (if you're listening)?.

Giles, I found the Tiny Personal Firewall very good and simple to use.

Thanks for the links. I was going to go for the Deerfield one but the server
version costs about £200. Am looking into the Personal Firewall one.

I used Deerfield before and that seemed pretty good, coming in at $50

I have run my Windows 2000 server for a while now with Zone Alarm Pro
installed with no problems - I am now trying to set up another server on
different hardware but with essentially the same software installed and am
having some real problems getting it to work - I looked once and the memory
usage of VSMON (the Zone Alarm process) was 400 MB - a lot more than it
should have been.

Can anyone recommend a good reliable firewall for windows 2000 server that
is cheap or free. Easy to set up would be nice. I'll also be installing it
remotely with VNC so being able to configure VNC access to the server
through the firewall before turning it on would be nice.

THanks
