I don't think that this makes any difference if you only have one disk.
The point of putting the scratch file on another partition / disk is so
that the program can access the OS / program / data file on one HDD and
at the same time access the scratch file on the other disk without the
head having to fly between the two.

If you only have one disk then the head still has to fly between the two
partitions.

Just my opinion but if you only have one disk don't think it helps.
