Yes that would work but the property you want is movieClip._alpha 
0 = invisible, 100 = visible.

get current bit of text, set transparency = 0      // completely visible

i don't know actionscript, so very pseudocodey i'm afraid.  the rest
you'll
have to find out yourself.  perhaps i've got the transparency the wrong
way
round too.

I have a bunch of text in an array.  I am cycling over that array and
making
the text come out and also move.

The thing I now want is to be able to fade it in and out.  The problem
is
that I cannot figure out how (in actionscript) to do this.

The text will change regularly, so saying something like "make a graphic
of
the text" isn't going to help.

Any ideas?  I'm just banging my head against a brick wall!
