The chat client I wrote for it uses Flash and takes advantage of XMLSocket() so the server can push changes out to any connected clients. Neither the client nor the server make regular scheduled refresh requests. The requests are triggered by some user input to one of the connected clients.
You could build the client as a java applet if you wanted to, but I found that Flash is much better suited to building the UI for a chat client than Java. I think you can also use a signed JavaScript file to do socket level stuff, but again Flash just seems like an easier option. The chat client and server part is relatively straightforward. The tricky bit is how you want this to hook up to ColdFusion.
