I did think of that but given the number of selects (4) the amount of data in _javascript_ would be massive.
 
I suppose it would take a longer time to load the first page but then would be faster within the site.

Look up a couple of rather old coldfusion tags called twoselectsrelated
and threeselects related.
The basic idea of these is to load a grouped query into _javascript_ using
cfwddx and use a function to populate the second and third selects
dependant on the selection made in the first and subsequent drop down.
