(sorry if this is
not in the right place Russ)
I've been doing web
support for about 2 years now using Paperthin's CMS and ColdFusion - my CF is OK
but nothing special (getting Advanced CF course soon).
When I have told
people that I am involved in web support - sometimes they assume that you
are a complete web guru - design, graphics, DHTML etc
etc
My design skills -
graphics, logos, CSS, DHTML are pretty restricted
I have only ever
built one 'proper' site from scratch for my football team (http://www.fclounge.co.uk) hosted on
cfdeveloper.
I have recently had
a few requests to build websites for other people - (guy from gym running
motorbike touring business, gf's dad's engineering business, friend's dad's
computer shop business)
What I was hoping
from this email - is not necessarily low level tech advice but general advice on
how to go about creating some fairly modest sites like this and the bits that go
along with it. Examples are:
- where to host site
(use host, buy own servers - what is the norm etc)
- on going cost of
hosting if applicable (chargeable to 'client'? etc)
- domain names (how
to buy/configure, not too hot here - have bought a domain for football club with
forwarding to cfdeveloper but that's limit of knowledge)
- costing (have NO
clue here how to come up with appropriate cost - per hour, per site,
rates?)
- ongoing
maintenance/enhancement agreements?
What I would really
(REALLY) appreciate is if any of you think you could spare a bit of time, off
list, to get me going via email/phone - it would be very much appreciated indeed
- just some general tips, advice and experience from your own clients/creations
- otherwise I don't think i would feel confident enough to take on projects for
other people without some initial pointers
