Is by any chance something - anything - causing a break in Mesa? Say, going into suspend, starting/stopping an extra OpenGL application, switching VTs? I run Ubuntu Intrepid, which is quite up to date with its mesa/xserver packages, and I get corrupt icons and various other things after all of the above on an i945.
