Hi Ian
If you look at 'usb' script in <mic_src>/platforms/common-apt/initramfs/ - we check /dev/sd[a-d] to see if it removable and if it is removable, see if it has rootfs.img on it. One of the possibilities that I can think of is the kernel is missing the usb driver. This would explain why it is not able to find the installation source.
