this would be right - IMAP servers doesn't contain any option
to controll it, they just have any method to _store_ the subscribed
folders.

Courier-IMAP stores this information in a simple file, called by
$HOME/courierimapsubscribed.
Example for its contains:

INBOX.Sent
INBOX.Trash
