I'm not seeing any performance issues like that of course I don't have tens of thousands of messages. My sent items folder is about 3000 messages and performance is just fine using the current beta of roundcubemail. I'm using 2 boxes - 1] a colinux server with dovecot 0.99 and mbox based mailboxes. -2] another box with apache2, mysql 4.x and roundcubemail. These are both Debian boxes. thanks
