Not only that the body of the original message is not being displayed
here,
even when "just" being attached (as in my message to the list) the body
stays invisible - with the same effect of the forever staying
"Loading..."
display at the top and the "freezed" (= non-reacting) menu commands.
IE8 doesn't report any Javascript errors in the lower left corner.

Could well be the browser. I will admit that my organization avoids IE
when possible, so I didn't look at it there.
But this is exactly the type of situation I had in mind when I put in
the feature request for a way to toggle between text/html in the display
frame. When it is failing to load, have you tried toggling to text?
