So, I wasn't comfortable signing up people or sending overly bold invitations to the new separate email lists just because people signed up on the site. But it's awkward and cumbersome to ask them to do a whole separate sign-up thing. A friend suggested that even though we might not want to build an *automated* thing that would sign up users who opt for email lists, we could at *least* add a human-readable acceptance checkbox or something to the site itself so that we have registered in some fashion people's acceptance to be on various mailing lists, thus it could be connected to the site somewhat.
