That's consistent with the API specification and examples.

That's a good question. I wasn't involved in the definition of the API,
so I don't know the answer either. If I had to guess, I would say it
wasn't intentional and just happened to be done differently by the
people defining the contacts part, perhaps to save JS developers some
typing.
