I don't think the JDBC part is ready for prime time yet. At the very least the following PRs need to be merged: - https://github.com/apache/incubator-livy/pull/117 (haven't had the time to go back to it) - https://github.com/apache/incubator-livy/pull/118
Now if you leave the JDBC part disabled in the binary packages, that should be fine.
