I just had a quick look at the files, and I noticed the following potential
problems:

I tried to verify with: gpg --verify apache-log4cxx-0.11.0.tar.gz.asc
apache-log4cxx-0.11.0.tar.gz
but gpg couldn't find the public key - do I need to import a special key at
all?

There's no configure script in the archives - for autotools projects, it's
assumed that they ship with a configure script. I'm going to guess that
the tar.gz and zip file were created with maven, instead of using 'make
dist dist-zip' which will include the configure and all other files needed
to build just by untarring and doing the normal ./configure && make && make
install

I installed on a clean Debian 8 VM, all the tests passed but I haven't done
anything beyond that.
