I prefer the least code changes currently, especially if you have that code available already. Unless log4cxx really puts a massive amount of work into it to switch focus to log4j 2, it doesn't seem to make too much sense to include a new feature with that switch in mind now. Nobody knows if everything or at least large parts of everything else gets switched as well. Of course one would need to start at some point, but... Life for people familiar with the current code base would only become more difficult. The new feature would be the only one not fitting into the current config approaches, probably for a long time. You would need to change your already available and possibly well tested code. Looking at your provided XML-examples, I wouldn't care too much which of both to prefer when using "MapFilter". In my opinion, time is better spent keeping your implementation and possibly enhancing docs, tests etc. as necessary.
