Stephen Weiss commented on SOLR-236:
------------------------------------

Just chiming in on that last comment... we also rely on functional paging and
total counts when collapsing as well. I once raised the idea of not providing
this information in our search results to my boss and he looked at me like I
had 3 heads, it's just not an option. In most of the patches on this ticket we
could get this data, but for some it seemed like eliminating totals and paging
wasn't a big deal and provided a significant performance boost. I can
understand the reasons for not including this for every collapsed query (if you
don't need the totals or paging then the performance boost is nice), but if
there was a way we could have an option to turn this on or off (even with the
performance hit, having it is better than not being able to collapse at all),
maybe that could help keep everyone happy. I remember it only was a difference
of 5 or 6 lines of code either way.

> This patch include a new feature called "Field collapsing".
> "Used in order to collapse a group of results with similar value for a given
> field to a single entry in the result set. Site collapsing is a special case
> of this, where all results for a given web site is collapsed into one or two
> entries in the result set, typically with an associated "more documents from
> this site" link. See also Duplicate detection."
> The implementation add 3 new query parameters (SolrParams):
> "collapse.field" to choose the field used to group results
> "collapse.type" normal (default value) or adjacent
> "collapse.max" to select how many continuous results are allowed before
> collapsing
> TODO (in progress):
> - More documentation (on source code)
> - Test cases
> Two patches:
> - "field_collapsing.patch" for current development version
> - "field_collapsing_1.1.0.patch" for Solr-1.1.0
> P.S.: Feedback and misspelling correction are welcome ;-)
