yeah ... it seems like it could be a good memory optimization, but i'm not
confident in the feasibility, and didn't want to tackle a huge refactoring like
that w/o a high degree of confidence in the gains ... at least not until the
existing code gets committed and beaten on by jenkins on a regular basis.
