the "other mechanism" is just making it a contrib rather than part of the
mainline code. Yonik put up a patch to trunk recently here:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-5302
I haven't looked at that, but the way forward would be to try to apply that
patch to the current 5x branch and see if it has any problems and go from
there. Any testing you can do would be great!
