Shawn Heisey commented on SOLR-7271:
------------------------------------

My own experience and view is that SolrCloud has been changing so fast that
it's surprising you can get ANY different client/server versions to work
properly together, and if the client is older than the server, it might be
impossible.

At this point I don't think we should worry about committing anything like this
to an old 4.x branch, but for users who may be stuck in a situation where they
cannot upgrade, it's awesome to have this issue to describe the problem and a
patch that will allow them to stay functional until they can upgrade.

> SOLR-4221 changed the router format from e.g.:
> {code}
> ...
> "router":"compositeId”,
> ...
> {code}
> to:
> {code}
> ...
> "router":{"name":"compositeId"},
> ...
> {code}
> This later commit:

> added backwards compatibility in the sense that the server can read the old
> router format. But the old 4.4 client can't read the new format, e.g. you
> get:
> {code}
> org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Unknown document router
