A bit late here, but a minor note looking at the default log4j.properties
there.. Won't it come up with empty \[\]'s for each property with no value?
Might be a little less weird looking if it was just \[%X\{a\} %X\{b\}...\]?
(Ideally conditionals in the pattern would be great if I am not aware of a way
to do with the standard PatternLayout)
