I'm positive to the latest combined approach, although I have not tested it.
Regarding back-compat, I view current behavior as a bug, so most people would
applaud the change.
However, I'm not opposed to a new config option for keeping old behavior, and
let new behavior be default based on {{LuceneMatchVersion}}.
